Water conservation is everyone’s business!

Talk to staff about water saving initiatives and encourage their contribution towards water saving efforts within the business.

  • Include water saving policies and procedures in staff inductions and discuss water efficiency at team meetings, including regular reports on water consumption.

  • Appoint a ‘water champion’ to check the water meter regularly and monitor water usage in the workplace.
  • Establish a baseline for water use and set achievable targets for saving water.
Here are some tips to get you started…

Taps

  • Install water-efficient taps with an aerator or flow restrictor to use less water.
  • Install lever or mixer taps, these save water by quickly reaching a desired temperature.
  • Fix leaking taps and replace washers - even a slowly dripping tap can waste 10,000 litres of water over a year.
  • Avoid washing up under running taps, consider using a sensor/time-based tap.

Dishwashers and Washing Machines

  • Cut water consumption by using white goods with a high water-efficiency rating.
  • Install water-efficient dishwashers to use 50% less water than average models.
  • Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes prior to dish washing.
  • Wait until you have a full load before washing dishes and clothes

Toilets

  • Replace single-flush toilets with dual-flush toilets.
  • Regularly check for leaks and fix immediately.
  • Install water-efficient urinals with smart controls to reduce unnecessary flushing.

Showers

  • Encourage staff and customers to limit showers to 4 minutes or less.
  • Utilise signage to remind guests/staff to conserve water in bathrooms/showers
  • Install water-efficient shower heads, which can use up to 40% less water.
  • Fix leaking shower heads.

Gardens and Outdoors

  • Install rainwater tanks for watering and outside cleaning
  • Use drought-tolerant plants.
  • Add mulching to keep moisture in the soil.
  • Water plants early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Consider sweeping instead of hosing.
  • Use a hand-held hose fitted with an instant on-off mechanism, such as a trigger nozzle or control lever, to control water consumption.
  • Adjust the water flow to best suit the job – consider pressure water cleaning equipment instead of using additional water.
  • Avoid water running off onto hard surfaces such as paths or roads.
  • Don’t leave taps or hoses running unattended.
  • Wash your vehicle using a bucket of water and a sponge, a hand-held hose fitted with an instant on-off mechanism, or pressure washer.
